Let's face it. No matter how excited you are that high school is over, the thought of starting college is not only exciting but also scary. You have no idea what to expect and although you are an adult your still waiting for that bell to ring, those deans to tell you to get to class, and the teachers to cut you some slack for being late on your first day. But that's not the case. You're an adult. There's no principle breathing down your neck, and there sure as heck isn’t teachers passing out tardy slips. In fact your teachers are not even teachers anymore, there (as they like to remind you so much) Professors or Doctors. They could care less if your here and they are not going to hold your hand. Sounds a little frightening right? But it's okay because getting use to college life is the easy part. It's the homework and studying that will have you posting on FML at three in the morning while trying to perfect your five page paper due at nine that takes getting use to. That was a mouthful: P. Fear not though, Nuri, the overachiever, is here to abate your pain.
It’s Thursday January 26th 2011 and it’s the fourth day of school. And I know it's practically the end of the week, but better late than never right? To ensure that you stop the little demon called "procrastination" from creeping up on you and ruining your life, get organized the first week of college. For some reason people think that the first week of school means that you can still slack off for another week because you're only doing introductions. And why yes, you do usually just do introductions, it doesn't mean that you should chill. So here is a list of things that you should get done in the first week of school that will help you be organized and ready for school.
1. Have a hard copy of all your course outlines. Hole punch them, staple them and put them in your binders under the tab of that specific class. This is so that you can refer back to outlines throughout the semester.
2. Figure out all the books you need to buy for the class and which books you can just go to the library use at the library. We all know the local bookstore on campus cost too freakin much, so I recommend that you try sites like abe.com and amazon.com to get your books for really cheap.
3. Get to know your way around the college and always keep a map and your schedule on you.
4. Figure out where the tutoring services are located and if as a student you have any free tutoring.
5. Get organized. Part of the reason people succeed in school is not only because they work hard but also because they work smart and neat. If you want to do well, then you need to start getting into the "school mode" in the first week of school.
These are pretty much the five basic things that you need to do when starting your first week of college. There's probably more but I think these are the most important things that should be done.
So take a deep breath, grow up, and get through it. And don't worry. I'm here to help you through all sorts of things that have to deal with college life.
Sincerely,
Nuri, the overachiever ;P
